In the summer of 2017, Abbey took an economics class at Utah Valley University. The class was auditorium style and had over 400 students, yet Abbey was the only woman in the class. Everyone noticed that she was the only girl and the professor would always call on her, "so that the class could have more female representation." While she enjoyed the class, and had made many friends, it still felt isolating to be the only girl.
As she continued to pursue her degree in business she had more and more classes where she was the lone-female student. This prompted her to seek out women's groups that she could join so that she could hopefully meet some more women with the same major. Abbey was given a list of all the women's groups on campus, but when she tried to contact them most of groups no longer existed. She then sought out women's groups in her city and found the same issue. She then decided to search for any women's groups in the state of Utah. After a lot of digging, she finally found a group, but had to pay $500 a month to join and she couldn't fit that in her college budget. She then realized that the group she was hoping to find did not exist.
Feeling defeated, she gave up on her search until two years later in 2019 when she applied for the Sols for Souls Women's Scholarship. There she was prompted to write about her goals and dreams. For the first time ever, Abbey put on paper her dream of starting an organization to help close the representation gap in Utah. She wanted to start the group she didn't have.
As she began to research the process of starting a nonprofit, her new roommate moved in. Emily had recently graduated college and was beginning her career as a high school teacher. She and Abbey spoke about their frustrations with Utah's lack of representation, and Abbey shared her vision of The Grit Girl Group. Emily was intrigued and decided to join. They needed one more member to make the dream a reality. That's when Abbey remembered an old college friend, Madee, and called her up. Turns out, two days prior to Abbey's call, Madee had been seeking a similar venture and joined the team without a second thought. The team has been working to build the foundation for The Grit Girl Group ever since.
